Meet Dr. Ashwin Patkar

Dr. Ashwin A. Patkar is Chief of Avance Psychiatry and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago. He was formerly Professor of Psychiatry and Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina.

Dr. Patkar has over 30 years of clinical and scientific experience in psychopharmacology, addiction, dual diagnoses, and integration of medical care for psychiatric disorders. Dr. Patkar is certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, addiction medicine, and pain medicine. Dr. Patkar has been listed in the Best Doctors in America continuously since 2009-2020.

Dr. Patkar has published over 275 scientific articles, 6 book chapters, and has given over 400 presentations and invited lectures at national and international meetings. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatry Association (APA), president of North Carolina Chapter of ASAM, the past president of the Indo-American Psychiatric Association, and member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, American Academy of Pain Medicine, Indian Psychiatric Society, Royal College of Psychiatrists, and World Psychiatric Association.

Meet Dr. Cameron Coleman

Dr. Coleman earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine, residency in Preventive Medicine, and fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds a Master degree in Biomedical and Health Informatics from UNC, with research focused on electronic health record systems (EHRs).

Before joining Avance, Dr. Coleman served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, where he practiced in both outpatient dual diagnosis and inpatient addiction consult settings. He has worked extensively with healthcare professionals in recovery and served as a treatment provider for Michigan’s Health Professionals Recovery Program. His background also includes medical director at opioid treatment programs (methadone clinics) in central and eastern North Carolina.

Dr. Coleman is committed to treating addiction as a chronic, treatable condition, and integrates care that addresses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In addition to his clinical work, he regularly lectures at conferences and has helped develop medical education curricula. He is especially passionate about reducing stigma and promoting harm reduction approaches in addiction treatment.
