Steven Prakken is the Chief of Avance Medical Pain Service, certified in Psychiatry/Neurology and Pain Management. He is the previous Director of Medical Pain Service for Duke Anesthesiology.
Dr. Prakken has decades of experience working with chronic illness and pain patients. His specialty is complex chronic pain patients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms. He is skilled in medication protocols and managing potential substance misuse/abuse. His multidisciplinary approach has documented success. Dr. Prakken’s highest priority is optimal patient function achieved through collaboration and shared decision making. He is a national speaker and author on pain management topics, collaborates with numerous governmental and private organizations, and is a board member of the Pain Society of the Carolinas.
Outside of work he enjoys travel, family time, wood-working, landscaping, and exercise.
