John Roberts, MD, is a board-certified Psychiatrist and Addiction Medicine Physician providing care to patients at Davidson Family Medicine, an Avance Care practice in Davidson, North Carolina.
Dr. Roberts earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University before completing his psychiatry residency and fellowships in anxiety disorders and substance abuse at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Roberts has an extensive background in academic medicine and clinical leadership. He served for several years as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, received several teaching awards, and lectured nationally on psychopharmacology, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, ADHD, and the neurobiology of addiction. For 17 years, he was the Medical Director of the nationally recognized Pavillon International Treatment Center, where he worked extensively with health care professionals, attorneys, and professional organizations, including Professional Health Programs and Judges and Lawyers Assistance Programs across the country. During his time at MUSC, he also served as a treatment provider for the NFL.
Dr. Roberts is passionate about diagnosing and treating psychiatric and co-occurring substance use disorders, focusing on the integration of psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and 12-step recovery. He strives to destigmatize mental health and substance use disorders, while educating patients and families about the disease model and treatment options available.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Roberts enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and pickleball, and performing as a vocalist in a variety of settings.
